Frequently Asked Questions

We've created this page to help answer any questions you may have about our joining a group

Does is matter what stage or where I am on my journey..?

The simple answer is no. We have people who are starting to understand their experience, some who have reported their abuser and others who do not want to. Others have accessed specialist support services, some are on waiting lists and some aren't ready to access that support yet. It doesn't matter where you are on your journey, or if you have or haven't accessed specialist support services. Our aim is to offer a safe space of acceptance and understanding, where you can socialise and nurture new friendships and feel like you belong.

Who decides which group is for me..?

You do. We want people to decide where they feel the most comfortable, as this is different for everyone. What connects us is our lived experience. We have one group that is only for women, the others are open to all.

Will I be asked or have to talk about my experiences in detail?

No, and why would we? We are not a professional support service, we are a peer support group. The two are very different in what they offer to victim-survivors. However, should you ever wish to talk about the impact your experience is having on you, we will listen. Our shared lived experience is what brings us together, even without even needing to say what happened to us.

Who can I expect to see at a session..?

Our sessions are ran by our volunteers, they may differ each time you come, but they are all wonderful people. And when we are able to some of the team behind Survivor Sanctuary will also be there, but as participants - as they are survivors too. Who shows up to each session differs. We won't chase you and ask why you didn't attend a session, and whilst you don't need to let us know that you are planning on coming, it is helpful for us to know how many people to plan for.

Is there a referral list or wait time?

You can self refer to the group, you do not need a be referred by a professional. There is no wait list/waiting time to join. You get to choose if and when you come to a session, there is no minimum requirement or commitment. We are here for you as and when you need us, no questions asked.
